Project AWARE Fish ID Specialty Course at Underwater Vision

The PADI Project AWARE Fish ID Specialty course will teach you how to identify fish using key techniques that will allow you to categorize what you see into fish families and species making identification in a book or on the internet easier post diving.

The skills you will learn on this course will be useful throughout your diving career. You will be able to use the identification techniques you learn all around the world and in every environment.

FISH FACT: The fish pictured here is called a Juvenile Spotted Drum which are a beautiful and exciting fish to spot on the reef around Utila. What makes them unique is how different the juveniles look from their spotted adult counterparts who do NOT sport the long dorsal fin! They are called Drums because of a low reverberation they are capable of making which can be compared to the sound of a beating drum.

When you learn to identify a specific species you will be able to learn about their interesting characteristics as well as what if anything is threatening its survival and as a PADI Scuba Diver what you can do to protect it.

What will you learn?

Once you learn to recognize what types of fish you see, you’ll find it easier to reference the exact species after a scuba dive. For example, a butterfly fish in the Caribbean has a similar shape to a butterfly fish in Southeast Asia, but colors and markings may be wildly different. If you know what fish family it belongs to, you can more easily look up the local name or at least be able to intelligently ask the local scuba instructor what you saw. During two scuba dives, you’ll learn:

How to identify characteristics of local fish families and species
Fish survey techniques and strategies
How to practice fish identification dive planning, organization and procedures

Get credit! The first dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course may credit as an Adventure Dive toward your PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification – ask your instructor about earning credit.
